Picture courtesy of horizons.m.wOver the last four decades, ACP's factories have been New Zealand's leading suppliers of toxins and manufactured bait products for the control of introduced Australian brush-tail possums - a pest which has seriously modified New Zealand's native forests and is a vector for the spread of bovine tuberculosis.

An estimated 120 million dollars (NZD) is spent annually on possum control programs funded by the Animal Health Board, Regional Councils, the Department of Conservation (DOC), forestry companies and farmers.

Although bait distribution by helicopters carrying under-slung spreader buckets accounts for the largest volumes of bait, ACP has a range of time-proven pellet and paste bait formulations for possum control. Thirteen separate possum product registrations provide a range of bait application options for both licenced operators and non-licenced users.

In recent years ACP has become recognised as one of the world's leading manufacturers and exporters of rodenticide baits; particularly for the eradication of rodents from off-shore islands where ecological restoration is sought. Rodent bait manufactured by ACP has been used to eradicate rodents from New Zealand islands including:

Kapiti Island (2,000 ha)
Browns Island (60 ha)
Putauhinu Island (144 ha)
Centre Island (88 ha)
Nukuwaiata Island (195 ha)
Long Island (142 ha)
Marlborough Rangitoto group of islands (220 ha)
Raratoka Island (86 ha)
Codfish Island (1,390 ha)
Tuhua (Mayor) Island (1,300 ha)
Campbell Island (10,000 ha)
Mokoia Island (160 ha)
Raoul Island (3,500 ha)
Little Barrier Island (3,000 ha)
Rangitoto & Motutapu (4,000 ha)
Fenced "Mainland Islands" at Maungatautari, Karori, Tawharanui, Bushy Park, Orokonui, Lake Rotokare,  and Young Nicks Head.

Pestoff Rodent Bait has proven itself to be so highly palatable to rodents while incorporating a moderated dose of a potent toxin (0.002% brodifacoum) that 100% kills can be achieved within a few days, yet non-target animals are at minimal risk from poisoning.

Bill Simmons of ACP holds egg plants at Fregate Island, Seychelles, after the eradication of Norway rats from the island. Prior to the eradication, it was impossible to grow ripe fruit or vegetables. Our clients use this failsafe formula for long term rodent eradication from offshore islands:

·  High bait palatability

·  Use of a potent, single feed toxin

·  Complete bait coverage.

·  Hand baiting and or bait stations in and around buildings.

·  Timely bait coverage.

·  Adequate bait application rates.

·  Re-infestation prevention measures.

·  Re-infestation contingency plan.

ACP has manufactured and exported bait for many overseas rodent eradication operations. We can sea freight full 40 foot and 20 foot shipping containers (FCL) and lesser volumes by either sea or air. Overseas operations supplied include:

Rat eradication Curieuse Island, Seychelles - July 2000. Helicopter pilot was Peter Garden of New Zealand.Bait manufactured and exported by ACP was used for rabbit eradication on Enderby Island (NZ), and on the Portugese Islands of Ilheu da Praia (Azores) and Deserta Grande (Madeira). On Pitcairn Island (South East Pacific), the establishment of a rat control program using ACP's Pestoff Rodent Bait and Pestoff Rodent Blocks has seen tropical fruit production reach record levels - an example of the cost effectiveness of these products for crop protection.

On Fregate Island (Seychelles) ACP's Pestoff Rodent Bait and Pestoff Rodent Blocks were readily eaten by Norway rats, despite the abundance of their usual foods which comprised fresh fruit, coconuts and vegetables. Monitoring results indicate that Norway rats have now been eradicated from the island - with huge benefits for both crop production and ecological values.

ACP staff assisted in the development of a feral goat eradication plan for Isla Isabela, Galapagos - September 1997ACP provides technical and operational support for many of these operations and works with many international conservation organisations to develop novel solutions for a wide range of vertebrate pest problems.

Our staff have many years of technical and operational experience in vertebrate pest control ranging from large mammal control such as deer, goats and pigs in wilderness areas, to rodent and small mammal control in rural and urban environments.
